Character Concept Art for Film and Games, Now Available

I am very excited to reveal my new course named, Character Concept Art for Film and Games!

Course Overview:

The course is designed to give you a deep dive into the production of creating character concept art for a film or game project.  Starting with an initial design brief, you’ll experience each stage beginning with core research and early thumbnails, right through to final rendering of your design and also creating professional design pages to support your concept.

In each session, you will see how I create concept art and the techniques I use working day-to-day in the industry.  We’ll cover tools and practical tips used in digital painting and, throughout the course, we’ll also discuss broader topics such as art direction, what makes an interesting design and advice on how to improve your portfolio.

The course will be structured as:
Week 1:  Introduction and Design Brief
Week 2:  Thumbnailing and Early Ideas
Week 3:  Refined Sketches
Week 4:  Using 3D in Concept Art
Week 5:  The Final Concept
Week 6:  Design Pages
Week 7:  Characters In-Situ
Week 8:  Final Presentation(Bonus Week)
Week 9:  Final Q&A

At the end of each live session, I will provide you an assignment to work on throughout the week.  Once you’ve completed your work and submitted it to me, I will then provide you with personal video feedback on your concepts.

Who am I?

I’m Dave Paget, a character concept artist working in the UK. Currently, I am the Expert Character Concept Artist at That’s No Moon and I’ve been working in the industry for about 15 years now. I’ve worked on a variety of projects in games, film, tv and animation with a mix of working as a freelancer and an in-studio artist. Some of the projects I’ve worked on include 007 First Light, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Call of Duty, Love, Death + Robots, Assassin’s Creed, Spider-Man and many more.

I’ve also worked as lecturer in the UK teaching concept art, and I’ve also worked as an online instructor teaching character design.  I’ve worked with 100s of students over the years and now I’m looking to bring all this experience together and set up my own course.

Live Sessions and Communication:

The course runs in an online Live-Class format.  The sessions will run every Tuesday at 11am UK time and we will meet every week throughout the course via Google Meet.  The classes will also be recorded so that you can refer back to any information that you need or if you happen to miss a session (if you’re sick, for example).  A link to the recorded session will be provided once it is uploaded to Google Drive.  Each session will be approximately 90 minutes long depending on the topic we are covering, and it will provide you a good opportunity to talk with me and ask questions about what we’re looking at.

For communication outside of the Live Sessions, I have also set up a Discord server where I can add you.  This will give us a good area where I can communicate with the entire class, provide information and also give you an opportunity to communicate with other students.

And, as mentioned above, I will also provide each student video feedback based on the work they have completed for each assignment.

Start Dates:

The course will begin running on Tuesday 6th January 2026 (11am, UK time).

Availability:

The course has limited availability and I’m going to take a maximum of 10 students.  This will operate on a first come, first served basis to keep things fair.

Cost:

For the 8-week course and individual student feedback, the price is £400 (pound sterling).  Payment plans are available and an invoice will be sent to you with payment details.

Payments can be sent via direct bank transfer or through PayPal.

I’m very excited to get this course started and, if you’re interested, please just drop me a message so we can discuss further details.  As mentioned above, the course does operate on a first come, first served basis so please reach out as soon as possible to check availability.

Thank you for taking the time to read all of this information and thank you for showing interest in the course, it’s very much appreciated.

I look forward to hearing from you.
